Answering
your questions about pledging at First Parish:
Why
pledge?
This
church is ours. As members we make all of the important decisions including approving
the budget. It isn’t possible to develop a budget unless we have an estimate of
anticipated revenue. Our pledges determine the revenue and therefore are essential
to budgeting. In addition, our pledge is a way of expressing our commitment to
the mission of our church.
What
is the money used for?
The
budget reflects what we, as a congregation, hope to achieve. It includes everything
you see at church and some things you don’t see – utilities, maintenance of our
historic buildings, salaries, candles, music, etc. Our support also strengthens
our UU voice in the community.
What
does it cost the church for each member?
Each
member costs the church approximately $1,200/year out of pocket.
Is
pledging a requirement of membership?
Pledging
is not required; however, it is expected that those people who benefit from the
church, participate in activities, and use the facilities will want to share in
its upkeep. Some members are able to pledge more, others less, but we need to
count on everyone to share in the support of our church.
Should
everyone pledge the same amount?
We
place a high value on diversity in our congregation - diverse views, background,
race, and experiences. Along with this diversity comes diversity of economic status.
We can’t all afford to support our church at the same financial level.
How
much should I pledge?
Although
we can’t all afford to pledge the same amount, we can each afford to support our
church generously. We can each afford to contribute a percent of our annual income.
The 2008 – 2009 pledge form has the UUA’s recommended giving levels for different
income levels.
What
about the money I put in the Sunday Offering?
Some
people use the Sunday Offering to make their pledge payments. Whatever you put
in the offering goes toward your pledge (as long as you identify it by using
a check or pledge envelope.)
What
are my options for pledge payments?
You
can make your payments weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annually. You may include
them in the Sunday Offering, mail them to the church, or charge them to your credit
card according to the instructions that you give us.
